After his death, his assistant and close student Goro Hatakeyama (1928-2009) and his heir son Sugino Yukihiro continued teaching in Europe.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-29ac09b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"29ac09b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Founder of the school<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e5e0e2d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e5e0e2d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Iizasa &quot;Ch\u014disai&quot; Ienao (1387-1488) was born in the village of Iizasa in Shimosa Province. He was an outstanding spearman and swordsman in the service of the Chiba family. After the fall of the clan, he wandered around the country for a long time, finally settling near the Katori temple, which was a popular martial arts center at that time. It is known that in his youth he was one of the teachers of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1436\u20131490). For some time he also held the office of governor of Yamashito Province. The current head of the school is the 21st principal Kota Iizasa, who took over from his predecessor, the 20th principal Yasusada Iizasa (Iizasa Shuri-no-suke Yasusada). Yasusada Iizasa had stopped actively practicing martial arts for health reasons and had previously entrusted teaching to master Risuke \u014ctake. The latter, in turn, after his retirement, declared his eldest son Nobutoshi \u014ctake his successor, while he gave his younger son Ky\u014ds\u014d Shigetoshi the title of shihan-dai. In 2017, Ky\u014ds\u014d Shigetoshi was given the full-fledged title of shihan (guiding teacher) and became an official representative of the school. His older brother Nobutoshi \u014ctake was expelled from the school on December 9, 2018.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf08d5f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cf08d5f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Famous swordsmen and the influence of Katori Shint\u014d-ry\u016b on other schools<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fe57f0a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fe57f0a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Many martial arts schools of the time were based on Katori Shint\u014d-ry\u016b. Several famous swordsmen (including Tsukahara Bokuden and Matsumoto Bizen no kami Masanobu) who learned directly from Ch\u014disai or his successors founded their own schools, using variations of its name, e.g.: Shint\u014d written in different characters - Kashima Shint\u014d-ry\u016b (Bokuden-ry\u016b ), Kashima-ry\u016b, Kashima shin-ry\u016b (founded by Matsumoto), Arima-ry\u016b, Ichiu-ry\u016b, Shigen-ry\u016b.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48d2cf8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"48d2cf8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Characteristics of style<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5e0846a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5e0846a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Katori Shint\u014d-ry\u016b techniques are intended to be used on the battlefield to fight fully armed. Wide and stable positions were to enable confident movement on uneven terrain and ensure adequate cutting power. Unlike a sports fight, the target of each attack are places not protected by armor (gaps in the armor, so-called female dogs). It is based on learning techniques arranged in training patterns (kata) for two people, with cuts being made to the training weapon instead of the body (which are mistakenly perceived as hard locks), so as to enable safe but uninterrupted training at full speed and force. Thanks to this approach, dozens of techniques and practical solutions could be woven into each kata, which over time become intuitive and reflexive to the practitioners.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ef9734 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9ef9734\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Modern masters<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a30236b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a30236b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><strong>Ky\u014ds\u014d Shigetoshi<\/strong>\u00a0- currently the school's chief instructor and youngest son of previous shihan Risuke \u014ctake.<\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Nobutoshi \u014ctake<\/span>\u00a0- previous head instructor of the school and eldest son of Risuke \u014ctake<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">.\u00a0<\/span>It became official\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/katori-shintoryu.jp\/en\/important-message\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expelled<\/a>\u00a0from school on December 9, 2018.<\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Risuke \u014ctake<\/span>\u00a0(1926-2021) \u2013 previous chief instructor of the school. He studied with Hayashi Yazaemon (1892-1964). Despite his retirement, he continues to live and teach near the city of Narita in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. He died at the age of 95 in Narita.<\/li><li><strong>Yukihiro Sugino<\/strong>\u00a0(1937-) - was born in Kawasaki and holds the rank of 9th dan. He was appointed official representative of the Katori Shint\u014d-ry\u016b branch by Iizasa Yasusada. He continues the teachings and traditions passed on to him by his father Yoshio Sugino at his d\u014dj\u014d in Kawasaki, Japan.<\/li><li><strong>Yoshio Sugino<\/strong>\u00a0(1904-1998) - held the rank of 10th dan. Responsible for the flourishing and popularization of Katori Shint\u014d-ry\u016b in Japan. His lineage is currently being continued by his son Sugino Yukihiro.<\/li><li><strong>Goro Hatakeyama<\/strong> (1928-2009) \u2013 assistant and close student of Yoshio Sugino. He held the rank of Menkyo Kaiden (9th dan) and conducted numerous seminars in Europe (including Poland) and North America. His line of teaching is continued by his students.
